Just one step - Careers Homework over the holidays

Hi Year 12,

So great to see so many of you at the Year meeting yesterday.

These holidays are an excellent opportunity to take a small and timely step now to secure your plans for next year.

Depending on your pathway please do one of the following activities from the list

Employment

  • It is easier to get a job when you already have a job. You have a job as a school student so it is good to act now to secure a job for when you leave. Employers will understand that you will need to complete your HSC. They may be interested in giving you a job trial in the holidays. It's important just to start - any work experience will increase your skills.
  •  A lot of people get jobs through people they know so it is important to talk to everyone about wanting to work. Family, friends, neighbours, sporting teams, church community etc.
  • Entry level jobs are most commonly advertised on affordable or free job sites such as Facebook eg https://www.facebook.com/groups/macarthurjobseekers/ or indeed https://au.indeed.com/ but it will also be useful to keep an eye on the larger more expensive sites such as Seek https://www.seek.com.au/
  • Try registering with agencies such as MyGateway https://mygateway.org.au/

TAFE

  • Call to book a meeting with a TAFE Careers Counsellor on 9217 3238 to get up to date information on what course will suit you best.
  • Search for the course you want to do at https://www.tafensw.edu.au/courses then Click 'Get your free Course Guide' fill in your details and an enrolment consultant will contact you.
  • Contact Centrelink - remember Year 12 school leavers are entitled to Youth Allowance if they take up study. It's not too early to register for next year.

University

  • Check your UAC application, make sure you have paid your $70, check the order of your course preferences, finalise SRS and EAS if you need too (see my early email on EAS SRS).  NOTE - If you are only apply for Western Sydney University or University of Wollongong they will accept your application directly. No need in this case to use UAC because you already are. Those Universities have actually connected to UAC on your behalf.
  • Apply for at least one scholarship particularly equity, community, leadership or any category that matches you.
  • Early Entry, register for and participate in interview or webinar if required.
  • Accept all early entry offers. This is a bit of blanket advice, just keep accepting offers, unless you know you really don't want it. The offers are all conditional and will expire automatically if you don't enrol. So plenty of time to consider options.
  • Contact Centrelink - remember Year 12 school leavers are entitled to Youth Allowance if they take up study. It's not too early to register for next year.

For urgent matters I will check my emails occasionally over the holidays. I am happy to help but like you will be using most of my holidays to rest and recover.

Congratulations for getting to the end of this term - you've worked very hard. Hopefully this Careers homework is straightforward and rewarding as you plan for the next stage,

Warm regards and happy holidays,

Mrs Abelitis
