Notice for Year 12 parents.

Year 12 students who are not planning to go to University need to be applying for an actual traineeship or apprenticeship or a job this school holidays. The majority of young people will not get the first job or apprenticeship that they go for. It's no different from the driving test - nerves often get the better of them - and many will need a second attempt. Taking the time this holidays to do a practice run is an excellent opportunity. If not successful your child can gain some valuable feedback ready for the real attempt in the following term or holidays. If they are successful, they can choose at that point to leave school or buy some time with work experience or Saturday work until they are ready in September. Students planning to stay in their current casual job can start asking questions regarding further training - what training opportunities and qualifications are available to young employees available to do more hours once they have finished school.

The risk of not doing a practice run is significant. In October when students are more ready they have until November at the latest to sort out their options. Multiple industries close down or minimise activities such recruitment over December and January. This leaves young people with very little to do until February.

1300 Apprentice is an agency doing a major mid year recruitment drive, but also interested in meeting 2019 apprentices and trainees. They are running 12 school holiday sessions in multiply trade areas. Students will complete aptitude testing and attend an interview. For more information and to register go to www.1300apprentice.com.au

Many other agencies will also be available to meet students. The following contacts may be useful

Attention Year 10 Parents.

All of Year 10 will be out on work experience during Term 4 (Date for 2019 TBA) and it's time to start planning.

Students will receive an information pack in class.

Please encourage your child to explore their options for Work Experience - this is a chance to shine. It is a really valuable and rare opportunity to see inside a work place and get a taste of a career. Young people also learn what skills and attributes employers expect.

Encourage your child to contact an employer and book in their own work experience and be persistent. The Work Experience Program has been around for nearly 50 years and has excellent community support so the majority of Employers are keen and know what is involved and expected.

The Student Placement Record is a formal 4 page document which serves as insurance paperwork over the work experience period. It requires 4 signatures - the student, the parent the employer and lastly the school. Your child's Student Placement Record is due in Term 3, (date for 2019 TBA) ready for school sign off.

Any questions about the work experience program, please contact the Careers Advisor Kristine Abelitis on 4627 1800

Students have now received their work experience information pack and are ready to start looking for work experience employer who is willing to take them in the last week of November.

Please encourage your child to contact an employer by themselves. This doesn't always work as your child may hit a road block trying to speak with the Manager. In this case, support them by using your adult advantage to talk with the manager, and then as quickly as possible pass the conversation over to your child.

If your child doesn't have a clue where to start and which job to choose I would encourage them to sign up to the My Future website. This national service is free for all public school children so they need to sign in using their det email account. Once signed in they can update their email details to their personal email. This is ideal as they will still have access to the site once they leave school.

Completing the My Career Profile will give them some direction and ideas. I recommend in the Education section ticking all the levels up to the highest the child plans to study.

As a parent you can also access the 'assist others' section right at the bottom of the site. In here there are lots of useful tips for parents including the very practical '11 tips to increase your child's interest in careers'.

As the Careers Advisor I will be directly contacting local employers to secure work experience places for our school. If students are struggling on their own I will be able to provide contact details for Employers who are willing to take on Ambarvale High School students that week. - Mrs Abelitis.
